Scott Needs a
Living Kidney Donor

“I would like my future living kidney donor to know that I take their kindness, very seriously, and would love to repay them with whatever I can. I’ve had a great life so far, and if I can have more time due to their kindness I will pay it forward.”

Scott’s Story

Scott, a remarkable husband and father, is known for his strength, humor, and kindness. Despite battling chronic kidney disease since birth, stemming from a birth defect, Scott has always remained resilient. At the age of 12, he underwent a life-changing kidney transplant, which sustained him for years. However, now facing a decline in kidney function and GFR, Scott requires another transplant. The most challenging aspect of Scott’s health journey is witnessing its impact on his loved ones. The waiting period for a suitable donor brings about immense stress and uncertainty for the entire family. Yet, amidst these trials, Scott’s unwavering spirit and the support of his family shine through, offering hope and strength as they await the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

We Need to Find a Living Donor

Scott’s battle with kidney disease shapes his every day, serving as a poignant reminder to tread cautiously and conserve his energy. The constant uncertainty surrounding his kidney function adds a layer of stress to his life, never knowing how much longer his current kidney will last. With the prospect of waiting up to five years or more for a deceased donor, Scott’s focus has shifted to finding a living kidney donor. Such a donation holds the promise of a brighter future, offering Scott the optimal chance for a fulfilling life alongside his beloved wife and children.

Donor Eligibility Requirements

Scott is extremely lucky to have secured highly qualified medical help and support from the team at the University of Utah Health (UUH). He wants any interested persons to know that they will be in exceptional hands should they decide to step forward. UUH has shared the following as a pre-qualification list for donation:

Must be between the age of 18-69 years old.

Must be healthy and free of major health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity (BMI of 37 or less).

Must be mentally and emotionally healthy.

Questions & Answers

Members of Scott's close family did step forward, but were not eligible to donate for health reasons.  This happens and can be incredibly frustrating for families who just want to help the person they love.  What many people do not realize is that sometimes, the best living donors are not related to the patient.

While the recipient's insurance will provide coverage for the donor, the donor needs to have their own health insurance in the rare event an unknown health issues comes up for the donor.

While the recipient's insurance covers all costs related to the donation (for Scott and his donor), there are expenses like travel, meals, and lost wages that can be incurred.  However, we want you to know there are resources available to ensure you do not have to pay for anything out of pocket. The GiftWorks' team can provide more information about those resources if you choose to step forward as a living donor.

Living kidney donors are often able to return to work within 2 weeks, and fully heal within 6-8 weeks. After surgery, the donor’s remaining kidney will also grow in size and function, allowing them to live normal life with just one kidney.

The following are pre-qualification requirements for living donation: must be between the age of 18-69 years old, must be healthy and free of major health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity (BMI of 37 or less), and must be mentally and emotionally healthy.

If Scott doesn't find a donor, he would likely have to endure the lengthy wait on the kidney transplant list, which could significantly prolong his suffering and increase the risk of complications associated with his condition.
