One of the most common myths I hear is that it takes months to recover from living kidney donation. I understand that concern—surgery sounds like a big deal, and it is. But here’s the truth: most living kidney donors return to their normal activities within just a few weeks.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, most donors are out of the hospital in 1–3 days and back to their usual routine—including work—within 2–4 weeks, depending on the type of work they do and their overall health. While every recovery is different, the idea that it takes months is simply not true for the vast majority of people. In fact, many donors say they’d do it all over again if they could. They go on to live long, healthy lives with one kidney – and carry with them the profound knowledge that they helped save someone else’s life.
Every year, over 6,000 people step up and become living kidney donors. Six thousand people choose generosity, courage, and hope.
