I am advocating for Steve in his search for a living kidney donor. Steve means the world to me, and I want to do everything I can to help him get the life-saving transplant he desperately needs.
Steve was born with the genetic mutation that causes polycystic kidney disease (PKD). He first discovered he had it at age 35 when he decided to donate a kidney to his mother, who was also affected by the disease. Since then, he has been under the care of a nephrologist, monitoring the progression of PKD.
A little over a year ago, Steve’s kidney function declined to the point where he had to start dialysis. While it is keeping him alive, dialysis three days a week for four hours per session has greatly restricted his life. Being retired military after serving over 30 years, Steve had plans to travel and spend time with his children and grandchildren, who all live out of state. But with dialysis tying him down, even a simple weekend getaway has become difficult. Despite it all, he remains active and hopeful that a transplant will allow him to regain his freedom.
While I would love to donate myself, I’m unfortunately not able to. But that doesn’t mean I’m giving up! I’m reaching out to you all in hopes that we can spread the word far and wide. The more people we reach, the better the chances of finding a match for Steve.
