Sanjeev Needs a
Living Kidney Donor

“A kidney transplant will quite literally change my life and our family’s future..it will indirectly help hundreds and thousands of kidney patients that I will be able to continue to treat in my medical practice.”

Sanjeev’s Story

Sanjeev was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy following a kidney biopsy. Despite extensive treatment over the last 28 years, his disease has slowly progressed to stage 5 (end-stage renal disease). At this time, his only options are to start dialysis soon or receive a kidney transplant as soon as possible. As a nephrologist, Sanjeev has spent over three decades treating patients with kidney diseases. The irony is heart-wrenching: a healer now desperately seeking healing. Despite his vast knowledge, experience, and determination, he cannot overcome this alone.

We Need to Find a Living Donor

Choosing to wait 3-5 years for a kidney from a deceased donor might not be the ideal option for Sanjeev. However, by finding a living donor, he can significantly speed up his kidney transplant process. Research indicates that recipients generally have better results with kidneys from living donors. Sanjeev dreams of returning to the hobbies he loves, including biking and photography. But most importantly, he looks forward to continuing his life’s passion for treating patients like himself battling kidney diseases and bringing hope to countless individuals and families by making advances in his field.

Donor Eligibility Requirements

Sanjeev is extremely lucky to have secured highly qualified medical help and support from the team at the University of Utah Health (UUH). He wants any interested persons to know that they will be in exceptional hands should they decide to step forward. UUH has shared the following as a pre-qualification list for donation:

Must be between the age of 18-69 years old.

Must be healthy and free of major health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity (BMI of 37 or less).

Must be mentally and emotionally healthy.

Questions & Answers

Unfortunately, no one in Sanjeev's family has been able to donate their kidney to him. In some cases, the best living donor is one who is not a family member.

While the recipient's insurance will provide coverage for the donor, the donor needs to have their own health insurance in the rare event an unknown health issues comes up for the donor.

While the recipient's insurance covers all costs related to the donation (for Sanjeev and his donor), there are expenses like travel, meals, and lost wages that can be incurred. However, we want you to know there are resources available to ensure you do not have to pay for anything out of pocket. The GiftWorks' team can provide more information about those resources if you choose to step forward as a living donor.

Living kidney donors are often able to return to work within 2 weeks, and fully heal within 6-8 weeks. After surgery, the donor’s remaining kidney will also grow in size and function, allowing them to live normal life with just one kidney.

The following are pre-qualification requirements for living donation: must be between the age of 18-69 years old, must be healthy and free of major health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity (BMI of 37 or less), and must be mentally and emotionally healthy.

The ideal situation for Sanjeev is to find a living donor. After enduring extensive struggles with kidney disease, waiting 3-5 years for a transplant from the list is far from optimal. A living donor would significantly improve his chances for a successful recovery and a better quality of life. His family and friends are doing everything they can to support him in this critical search.
