It’s never easy to ask for help—especially when the request is as personal as this. My friend Deon has been living with the effects of Lupus since 2005, and by the time doctors discovered the impact on her kidneys, the damage was already severe. In 2021, Deon entered renal failure. She’s been on the transplant list since 2022, hoping to find a living kidney donor and avoid the harsh toll of dialysis.
Deon is one of over 100,000 people in the U.S. waiting for a lifesaving kidney transplant. The wait can take years, and my fear is that time is not on her side. Every day, she deals with fatigue, medication side effects, and the mental strain of uncertainty. But even with all that, she continues to show up for her family, especially as a mom, and she holds on tightly to hope.
What makes Deon so special is her deep compassion. She’s someone who worries just as much about others as she does about herself—even now, she prays that her future donor stays healthy and well. That’s the kind of heart she has.
Here’s something incredible I recently learned: when someone donates a kidney, the remaining kidney actually grows to take over the full function needed by the body. The human body is amazing—and so is the gift of life through living donation.

And if you can’t donate, you can still help by sharing her story.
